Wetlook is usually a spandex blend (most often with 95% polyester or 80-90% nylon, the latter generally higher quality) backing with a very light coating of PVC like material but so thin or done in a way which allows it to breathe, unlike most materials known simply as "PVC". (which in itself has endless varieties) "Spandex", at least the shiny kind, is usually nylon/spandex blend. (spandex disco jeans are 90/10 nylon/spandex respectively, the better varieties of exercise wear like Gilda Marx Flexatard were 88/12, while most spandex used for athletic wear are around 80/20)
It might be noted most people don't realize while Spandex Disco Jeans all largely followed a similar style copied by all manufacturers, there were two distinct fabrics used. Both had the same 90/10 content but one had 4 way (up and down, side to side) stretch while another had 2 way (up and down only) stretch with a more smooth satiny appearance. The latter 2 way is more rare and I believe typical of earlier examples of the trend. It's also less forgiving of bad fitting, however if anyone remembers certain movies and TV shows of the late 70s where they had that drop dead hot "hooker walk" booty shot, you could tell the difference as the 2 way if tight enough really had them stuffed like shiny sausage in them.
Or if you were lucky enough to have seen the real thing in Hollywood in those days (a half dozen good looking streetwalkers on every block for 20+ blocks each of Sunset Blvd, Hollywood Blvd, Santa Monica Blvd, and many intersecting streets- about half in every color SDJ you can imagine) At the same time Frederick's headquarters and a dozen boutiques in the same area had racks upon racks of the things, though they weren't cheap enough to say hoarding them would have been a good investment even with ebay fetching $100-150 a pair now.
Sadly between AIDS and the overall atmosphere in the country of the Reagan Right (he was a fine president but that Moral Majority, well...) all the vice in Hollywood virtually ended by about 1984.
Probably more than you wanted to know but no sense letting this knowledge go to waste, eh?
