H265/HEVC Codec

Postby dlongone » Tue Dec 08, 2015 1:33 pm

I've started using the latest codec, which is becoming popular on download sites.
It gives better quality in a 40% smaller file size.
Recent VLC, DIVX player, or codec pack should play the files without issue.

Here is a generic codec that will work with Windows Media player:
http://www.strongene.com/en/downloads/downloadCenter.jsp
Ignore the "license price" comments, the decoder is a free download.
There will be 4 DLLs in the folder you downloaded.
Put the one with _x64 in it's name in your Windows\SysWOW64 folder, and the other 3 in your Windows\System32 folder.
Now run the reg.bat and reg64.bat files.
Close and reopen your media player.
If it still doesn't work, download the Lav Filters from here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/lav_filters.htm
If you have the Haali splitter installed, heed the notice to uninstall or disable it before installing LAV.

I can only get sound but no picture.

New codec needed. Install Strongene and/or LAV filters.

Doesn't work for me. I can't access the site - my Kaspersky keeps on blocking me from accessing or downloading anything. Tells me the files may well damage or alter pre-existing files on my PC :(

Does anyone here not use VLC for everything?

I occasionally use MPC-HC on the rare occasion VLC won't play something but that's probably a 1/1000 occurance.

Here are several other links to the LAV codecs:

Not sure why antivirus programs are blocking the download from github, it is a 100% legal site for software developers.
Norton/Mcafee trying to scare people out of downloading anything? Extorting ransom from sites to be whitelisted/ no longer blocked?
I just use the free Comodo Firewall/Antivirus, and would not tolerate any program that refuses me access to entire sites.
VLC has many fans. I haven't used it in awhile, seems to be a "bulky" program for my needs.
I use Media Player Classic and a version of Zoom Player that are over 10 years old, LAV codecs play everything fine.
New codec is gaining popularity, you will want to get it one way or another to avoid missing out on downloads.
