How to create a preview picture - Tutorial

Postby UrMa » Fri Feb 15, 2008 1:06 pm

Here I'll collect different ways to make preview pictures of videos.

The easiest way for me is to use "Media Player Classic".
It can save images and thumbnails. No installation necessary.

Download:
Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2
Select "Download Guliverkli2" (on the green field)
Select "Media Player Classic"
Save and run "mplayerc.exe"

Make a preview:
Open the video
Select "File" --> "Save Thumbnails..."

Newest version at the moment is 6.4.9.1, from January 27, 2008.

A german version can be found at: http://mom.mpc.googlepages.com

An other way is to use the "VLC media player".
It only saves images, no thumbnails. Also no installation necessary.

Download:
Go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc
Select your operating system
Select the type you want, *.exe, *.7z, *.zip and a mirror
Extract the folder
Run "vlc.exe"

Settings:
Select "Settings" --> "Preferences..."
Go to "Interface", select the language
Go to "Video", specify the "Video snapshot directory" and the filetype

Make a preview:
Open the video
Select "Video" --> "snapshot"

Thanks for the tips UrMa!

Please ensure that all the snapshots you post are in JPEG format. VLC (at least the version I have) defaults to PNG, which isn't really suitable for movie snaps.

The rules have been updated: do not post media from pay-per-click hosts, such as FileSonic and HotFile.

Yes. Thanks for the tips.

However, I remain convinced that the reason people don't post more, is because they can get away with it.

What we need is a non-posting tax; followed by the development of a new internet religion.

I would recommend the tool "Image Grabber II". It's small, easy and free.

You don't even have to setup it. Just extract the downloaded ZIP-File and then extract the included "ImageGraberII.exe" with 7Zip.

You get 6 Files:
- Image Grabber II.exe
- license.txt
- mfc71.dll
- mfc71u.dll
- msvcp71.dll
- msvcr71.dll

And after making some changes to the settings ("File", "Options")
you get another file
- options.grb

Short description on videohelp.

Howto use:
1) Open a (video-)file with "File", "Open File", browse to the movie and open it.
2) Stop the automatically playing file by clicking on the red stop button
3) Klick on the monitor button and choose the number of preview-pictures
4) Wait until the choosen number has been created
5) Press "File", "Save File" (make some changes if you like) and then press the "Save" button
6) Browse to the destination folder for the preview picture and press "Save" button

That's all.

I did exactly what you described about image grabber software and I only get an info jpg (which tells me file name, size etc.) not preview images.

I just tested ImageGrabber, and it grabbed the same frame for all thumbs. I'd suggest that it has issues.

Most people use MPC. That's your best bet if you don't know any other way.

I have repeated all the above steps (incl. the download) and everything works fine under Vista Ultimate.

Some questions:
- How many pics do you choose under 3) ?
- Can you see that different pics are created?
- What type of movie do you want to 'grab'?

It sounds like you've still got issues, if you don't know the answers to those questions.

I found it works if you do the captures while it is playing, but my instinct was to stop it before doing anything.
